A WELCOME FROM RABBI AMY

Meet Rabbi Amy

Welcome to Neshamah’s online bar mitzvah program. We bring the same warm, personal preparation we’ve offered families for over 25 years to students everywhere. Your child studies live with teachers who know them, meets regularly with Rabbi Amy, and arrives at the bimah confident, prepared, and proud of who they are.

There is no synagogue membership to buy and no one-size-fits-all curriculum. Every detail of the journey is customized for your child, in partnership between teacher, Rabbi Amy, and your family.

Maybe you do not belong to a synagogue, and never have.

Maybe you are an interfaith family looking for a place where everyone is welcome.

Maybe there is no Jewish community near you, or the ones nearby never felt like yours.

Maybe your child learns differently, and you want a program that meets them where they are.

Whatever brought you here, there is a welcoming home for your family at Neshamah.

WHY NESHAMAH

What Makes Our Online Bar Mitzvah Program Different

Teachers who know your child

Small, personal, and live. Your child studies with teachers who know them, enjoy them, and pace every lesson to their best speed.

A real relationship with the rabbi

Rabbi Amy meets with each family individually throughout the journey to plan the service, guide the speech, and celebrate your child.

Every learner, every level

Total beginner? Some background? Learning differences? No prior Jewish education is needed. We meet your child exactly where they are.

Your family's schedule

Lessons happen online at times that work for your family, with flexible pacing and check-ins over the summer as needed.

Interfaith families fully welcome

Every parent, grandparent, and sibling has a place of honor in this journey and at the ceremony.

How Our Online Bar Mitzvah Program Works:
The Journey to the Bimah

Families ideally begin about 18 months ahead, though we happily work with shorter timelines.

Here is the path from first hello to the big day.

1

The Welcome Call

A free, no-obligation conversation with Rabbi Amy about your child, your family, and what a meaningful Bar or Bat Mitzvah looks like for you.

2

Choosing the Date and Torah Portion

Together we set the date and discover the Torah portion your child will make their own. Services take place on Saturdays or other Torah reading days.

3

Weekly Live Lessons

Your child studies prayers, Torah reading, and the meaning behind both in live online sessions, personally guided at their own best pace.

4

Writing the D’var Torah

With Rabbi Amy’s guidance, your child writes a speech that is truly their own, in their own words and their own voice.

5

Mitzvah Project and Beyond the Party

Students choose a mitzvah project, and the whole family joins Beyond the Party, our program for making the journey meaningful together.

6

Rehearsal with Rabbi Amy

A full rehearsal before the big day, with musical accompaniment available, so your child steps up knowing exactly what to expect.

7

The Ceremony

Your child leads, reads Torah, and speaks. Your family celebrates. And afterward, you are part of this community. Always.

A Venue of Your Choice

A backyard, a beach, a hall, a place that matters to your family. We help you design a service that fits the setting.

Loved ones who cannot travel can still share the day. Ask us about options for including far-away family in the celebration.

Younger Kids at Home?

The Bar or Bat Mitzvah journey begins years earlier with joyful Hebrew learning.

Our Online Hebrew School welcomes children in kindergarten and up with the same teachers, the same warmth, and the same no-membership promise.

Grandchildren Live Far Away?

Many grandparents want to give their grandchild something that lasts far beyond a birthday or holiday, a real connection to their heritage and their family’s story. If that’s you, I’d love to talk about how you can make this journey possible for your grandchild, wherever they live.
