A parent texted me after her son’s very first session in our new Hebrew reading program.

 “First session, he loved it!

The way she structured the lesson was perfect (coming from a former teacher). Lots of praise and reassurance. Lots of energy. Such a perfect fit!”

Toni – Mom of new student June 2026

That message is exactly why I’m so excited to share what’s new in our Hebrew school this year. We’ve brought in Aleph Champ, a Hebrew reading method that’s fun, structured, and built for how kids actually learn.

Why Our Hebrew Reading Program Matters

Teaching kids to decode Hebrew letters and vowels takes real effort, from us and from them. So why bother with a Hebrew reading program at all? A few reasons ..

First, it connects our kids to thousands of years of tradition. When a child sounds out a Hebrew word, they’re doing something Jewish people have done for generations. That’s a thread reaching backward through history, and your child is now holding it.

Second, it means our kids can stand on the bimah on their Bar or Bat Mitzvah day and read directly from the Torah. Not transliteration. The actual text, the same letters copied by hand onto every Torah scroll for thousands of years.

Third, learning a new language, especially one with a different alphabet, is wonderful training for a young brain. It builds memory, pattern recognition, and focus that carries over into everything else a child does.

And the simplest reason of all: because they can. Our kids are capable of so much more than we sometimes give them credit for. It just needs the right method.

Of course, every child learns differently, and for students with learning differences, we adapt our approach so every kid can find success at their own pace.

What Makes Our Hebrew Reading Program Different

Aleph Champ breaks Hebrew reading into clear, achievable steps, like a karate belt system. Kids earn stickers and medals as they progress through levels, building real skills. It’s one pillar of our Hebrew school curriculum, built specifically for how kids learn best.

What I love most is how it feels for the kids. It’s hands on and interactive. Nobody sits still staring at a worksheet for forty five minutes. They’re up, engaged, and having fun while their brains are doing serious work.

Small Groups, Real Attention

Here’s the part that makes Neshamah’s version special. Our kids work in small groups with guided instruction from our teachers and our teen leaders.

Our teen leaders aren’t just helpers in the room. They’re recent graduates of this exact program, kids who sat in these same seats not long ago. When a seven year old struggles with a tricky letter combination and a sixteen year old leans over and says “I remember when this one tripped me up too, here’s how I got it,” that’s mentorship we can’t replicate any other way. It’s exactly what a dues free, membership free Jewish community should feel like.

Stickers, Medals, and the Joy of Getting Better

As kids complete each level, they earn stickers and medals. It might sound small, but watch a kid’s face when they get one. There’s real pride there, the kind that comes from working hard and seeing it pay off.
