From the Desert to Boca: Celebrating Ian’s Bar Mitzvah

This May, our Neshamah community had the joy of watching Ian become a Bar Mitzvah. And what a unique and spirited young man he is.

Ian’s Torah portion, Bamidbar, opens in the desert, where every Israelite is counted and given a role. Every person matters. Every person has something to contribute. Ian understood this immediately, and he made it personal.

He began his d’var Torah with gratitude for his family: his parents, grandparents and everyone who has poured love and stories into him along the way. He talked about building model cars with his dad, spending holidays with extended family, afternoons in the pool with his mom, riding e-bikes with Brandon, soccer with Rob, and the legendary Charlie, who is apparently the best dog in the world and fully aware of it. He counted each person in his family and appreciated their specific role in his life. How amazing!

The celebration began even before Saturday morning.

Ian’s family joined us for Neshamah’s Friday night Shabbat service, welcoming the Bar Mitzvah in the most beautiful way possible: surrounded by community, candles, and song, as Shabbat descended over Boca Raton. There is something about beginning a Bar Mitzvah weekend at Friday night services that sets the whole tone. It says: this is not just a party. This is a Jewish life, and we are living it together.

And then, because this family does not do anything halfway, they showed up again on Sunday morning for our Mitzvah Fair at a time when most Bar Mitzvah families are still sound asleep after a very late Saturday night. That alone tells you everything you need to know about Ian and the people who raised him.

A note about love and loss.

Since Ian’s Bar Mitzvah, his family has suffered a profound loss. His Nana passed away suddenly, leaving a hole in the family that no words can fill. She was there for his milestone. She saw him become a Bar Mitzvah. Ian brought his whole family together!

In the Jewish tradition, we hold joy and grief together, because life asks us to. The same Torah that teaches us to celebrate also teaches us to mourn, to remember, and to carry our loved ones forward with us. Ian’s Bar Mitzvah remains what it was: a day full of light, love, and promise. And Nana was part of it. That will never change.

Even now, as the family grieves, the joy of Ian’s Bar Mitzvah is still vibrant and still full of love. That is the miracle of these moments. They belong to us forever.

Ian, you are just beginning your journey through the desert. And you will walk every step of it carrying the people who love you, including those who are no longer here to walk beside you.

Mazal tov to Ian and his entire beautiful family. I am honored to walk this path with you.

With love and every blessing to your family, Rabbi Amy
