They came to us with a question many families are afraid to ask out loud.
Mark and his wife had a son, Daniel, who was 11 years old. They celebrated the holidays. They felt connected to their Jewish identity. But they also felt something was missing, a foundation of learning, a sense of community, a path toward Bar Mitzvah that didn’t require years of catching up in a system that wasn’t built for them. Daniel was already 11. His Bar Mitzvah was less than two years away.
Was it too late?
It was not.
“We were searching for a way to offer our son a start to his Jewish education, beginning at the late age of 11, and a community that we could turn to easily practice our faith in a reformed setting and without judgement.”

The Fear Families Don’t Say Out Loud
There is a version of Jewish life that can feel exclusive, where the unspoken message is that you should have started sooner, known more, belonged longer. Many families who come to The Neshamah Institute carry that weight with them. They love being Jewish. They just don’t feel like they’re doing it right.
That feeling is exactly what we exist to undo.
No membership dues. No prerequisite Hebrew school. No judgment about where you’re starting from. Whether your family is deeply observant, just finding your footing, interfaith, or simply searching for something real, there is a place for you here.
“If you are looking for a friendly, special place to informally practice your Jewish faith, give Neshamah a try. We are so thankful that we did.”
Mark D.
Two Years. One Transformation.
Daniel began his Jewish education with us at 11. He attended Sunday morning classes, and here is what his father wrote about that:
“My 11-13 year old son even enjoyed the classes that he attended on Sundays, which in itself was a miracle.”
Mark D.
We smiled reading that. Because it’s true, getting a preteen to willingly show up on a Sunday morning and genuinely engage is not a given. The fact that Daniel did says something about him. But it also says something about the environment we work hard to create.
Daniel’s father explained why it worked:
“Rabbi Amy and her teachers Lori, Shelley, Kira, Jennifer, and Cantor/Rabbi Sharon were kind, knowledgeable and taught with an open heart, sincerely wanting Daniel to succeed. He felt their warmth and they have a unique ability to remove any anxiety and fear associated with learning something new and with presenting in front of a room of friends and family.”
Mark D.
That phrase, “remove any anxiety and fear,” is something we think about deeply in how we design Bar and Bat Mitzvah preparation. Standing on a bimah is vulnerable. Chanting in Hebrew in front of everyone you love is vulnerable. A 13-year-old who feels safe, supported, and believed in will rise to that moment. We choose warmth. Every time.
The Team Behind Daniel’s Bar Mitzvah
Daniel’s journey was guided by a remarkable group of people, each of whom the family took care to name and thank.
Lori and Shelley provided the foundational Jewish education, the knowledge and framework that gave Daniel a real understanding of what he was preparing for, not just the mechanics of the service.
Kira brought organizational mastery and personal warmth to the logistics. On the day itself, she coordinated with the venue, handled every detail, and gave the family the one thing money truly cannot buy: calm. “She made us feel calm,” Mark wrote, “knowing all the particulars were taken care of.”
Jennifer supported Daniel’s learning throughout with the kind of patient, encouraging presence that helps a young person grow in confidence week by week.
Cantor/Rabbi Sharon stepped in during the final stretch and delivered something extraordinary. Meeting with Daniel both Sunday and Friday before his Bar Mitzvah, she prepared him not just technically but emotionally. His father wrote: “You would never know that she stepped in late in the process.”
“Rabbi Amy is a wonderful, inspirational person and leader. She made us feel very welcome and led us to wanting to attend monthly Shabbat Dinner and Services.”
Mark D.
A Bar Mitzvah and a Beginning
Here is what moves us most about the Deutsch family’s story: it didn’t end with the Bar Mitzvah. It began there.
After Daniel’s Bar Mitzvah, Mark and his family started attending Neshamah’s monthly Shabbat Dinner and Services. They found what they had been looking for all along, not just a ceremony, but a community. A place to practice their faith, simply and authentically, without barriers.
That is the vision behind everything we do at The Neshamah Institute. A synagogue without walls. A Jewish home for people who thought they might not have one.
“We are proud to say that Daniel had a beautiful Bar Mitzvah last week and it truly would not have been possible without the Neshamah Institute Team.”
Mark, Marta, and Daniel D.
